Q. What is preventive medicine?

A. Preventive medicine is the medicines and methods we use to prevent the diseases such as vaccinations/routine deworming/fecal exams/heart worm preventative medicines.

Q. What shots does my puppy need?

A. Puppies need 4 sets of the distemper, parvo, corona combo (also called a 6-in-1) at 3 week intervals, 3 sets of bordetella at 3 week intervals, and 1 rabies vaccination to stay healthy.

Q. When should I start my puppy’s shots?

A. It is recommended to begin vaccinations at 6-8 weeks old.

Q. Are fecal exams, deworming and heart worm prevention really that important?

A. Yes, they are. Fecal (stool sample) exams allow us to check your pets for microscopic organisms and worms. Many worms can be passed onto children and some adults. We recommend that you deworm your pet with each vaccination as a preventative, even if passed fecal tests were negative. Heartworms are blood parasites which are spread by mosquitoes. A simple blood test will check for this deadly disease. Fecal exams and deworming should be done a minimum of once a year and heartworm tests every two years for animals taking preventative medications.

Q. When can I have my pet fixed?

A. Dogs and cats can be spayed (girls) or neutered (boys) at between 5-6 months of age.

Q. Why should I neuter or spay my animals?

A. Spaying or neutering your animal is important for the control of unwanted puppies and kittens. American Humane estimates that 9.6 million animals face death at kill shelters every year due to overpopulation. Spaying also prevents mammary gland tumor in females and neutering prevents prostate gland tumor in males. Removing an animal's reproductive organs can also lead to better behavior in male dogs and can prevent spraying by male cats.

Q. My dog’s breath stinks. Should I give him a specially made dental treat for it?

A. Many pets suffer from dental disease. Dental cleaning should be done as needed. When his teeth are clean and shiny, routine maintenance like brushing. C.E.T. dental chews should be used regularly. Please call to schedule a dental exam or dental cleaning.

Q. What is the right food for my pet?

A. Each pet has his or her own unique needs depending upon the stage of life he or she is at and if they have any special dietary needs. Please call to set up a general health exam and we can discuss what food is the best for your pet.

Q. What types of payment do you accept?
